Why do the wild horses need our help?

How many wild horses are left in the wild?

There is an estimated 75,000 wild horses left in the wild.

How many wild horses are there compared to cows on public lands?

In 2017 there were 16,300-27,000 wild horses and burros allowed by the BLM on public lands compared to 727,000 cows. {Source: Statistics on [Cows] Grazing on Federal Lands}

What is a roundup?

Roundups are when helicopters are used to scare, round up and and remove wild horses from a designated area. They can be removed in the hundreds or thousands. The BLM legally has to list all roundups online. Many horses die during or immediately after being rounded up.

Are horses slaughtered? I thought Americans didn't eat horse meat.

Yes, horses are slaughtered. Many wild horses are sold to buyers who ship horses over to Mexico where they are slaughtered for their meat. Horses can sell for as low as a few dollars to any buyer.

What is the BLM?

The BLM stands for The Bureau of Land Management and is an agency within the United States Department of the Interior. Most states managed by the BLM are on the West Coast - including Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, and Wyoming. The BLM controls one-eighth of the country's landmass, but leases over 60 percent of it to cattle ranchers. Since cows rely on the same resources the wild horses do, some ranchers want the wild horses pushed off the land entirely.

In what states are wild horses and burros being rounded up?

Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, California, Arizona, and New Mexico.

How can I help?

First and foremost, go vegan. Wild horses and burros are being rounded up and killed because of cattle ranchers. The land is need for more + more cows, pushing horses out of their homes and into holding facilities. If people stop creating a demand for cow meat then less horses will be forced to die. If you care about the horses it is imperative that you acknowlegde this. You can then help by spreading the word about what is occuring to wild horses and burros. Donate to sanctuaries who are rescuing and giving homes to wild horses, as well as organizations who are fighitng to protect them. (I recommend only supporting organizations that advise that veganism is a necessary step in helping the horses.)

How many wild horses are currently in holding pens?

There are over 45,000 wild horses currently in holding areas, costing taxpayers about $50 million annually. {Source: Wild horses facing slaughter after US government proposes new regulations. By Gloria Riviera}

What happens to the horses after they are rounded up?

After the wild horses are rounded up, Schnepel said some will go in the "adoption circuit" where they are domesticated as pets or work horses. "[But] typically," Schnepel said. "They’ll get put into a long-term holding and that means they get shipped to the Midwest. BLM has contracts with ranchers back there that pays them so much per day to keep the horses." {https://abcnews.go.com/US/wild-horses-facing-slaughter-us-government-proposes-regulations/story?id=52538898}

Does the BLM want to kill off wild horses?

If slaughtering wild horses becomes legal, some animal rights activists are concerned that these horses will become extinct. "The BLM, the very agency in charge of protecting them, is asking Congress for permission to kill them," Netherlands said. "They've stockpiled wild horses in holding pens ... and so now what are they going to do with all the horses that they've stockpiled? The adoption rates are not high enough so they can't adopt them all out. So now we have a bunch of wild horses that the taxpayers are paying for and holding facilities and their solution is kill them." {https://abcnews.go.com/US/wild-horses-facing-slaughter-us-government-proposes-regulations/story?id=52538898}
